This exceptional landscape can only be admired from below, by sailing on the river. There are two options: a boat trip with the Bateliers des Gorges du Tarn, who will tell you all about the history of the Tarn Gorges and take you through the Détroits, or a more challenging canoe trip. You’ll discover a grandiose, serene landscape, where only the ripples of the water moved by your boat will disturb the peace and quiet.
the Straits
DID YOU KNOW?
The road built at the beginning of the 20th century runs alongside the Détroits, but does not provide access to the river at this point. It was dug into the first limestone overhang of the cliff on the Causse de Sauveterre side. Prior to the existence of the road, only the linear path on the left bank or the descent of the river by boat existed.
Below Roc des Hourtous
Higher up, on the Causse Méjean, the Roc des Hourtous, accessible from La Malène or Les Vignes, offers an imposing view of the Gorges du Tarn, with a plunging view of the Détroits. At the top of the cliffs, only 100 metres separate the two Causses. It was here, between the Roc de la Truque and the Roc des Hourtous, that the famous tightrope walker Henry’s crossed the Gorges du Tarn on a tightrope in 1990.
- How to get to the Straits
From the river by canoe or boat, from the GR736 Gorges et Vallée du Tarn, from the Gorges du Tarn road between La Malène and the Cirque des Baumes (viewpoint).
- Is it easy to get to the Straits by road?
This is where the road is the narrowest in the Gorges du Tarn. With a camper van, this can be tricky in summer…
