Château de Grandlac, a fortified estate in the heart of the Causse de Sauveterre

Château de Grandlac is located on the Causse de Sauveterre, some ten kilometers from Laval-du-Tarn and to the east of Baraque de Lutran. Construction of the fortified house dates back to the 14th or 15th century. The Grandlac estate was first mentioned as a “manse”, a feudal agricultural estate, in 1307 in the deed of parage between the bishop of Mende Guillaume Durand and the French king Philippe le Bel.

A number of architectural features remain from this period: the corbels supporting the machicolations, the lamp arches of the watchtowers, and a monolithic lintel decorated with a trefoil used in the gable.

In 1580, the house was the property of Jean de Maillan, a member of the noble bourgeois family of La Canourgue. He married Jacquette de Mostuéjouls, uniting the Grandlac and La Cazeestates to which she was heir.

After a long period of neglect, the building was bought by the de Nogaret family in the mid-19th century. The farm buildings were then built or restored: the date 1881 is engraved in the barn-stable. Today, the house is still inhabited. The building’s austere beauty stands out in the midst of a landscape of solitude.

The château is privately owned and not open to visitors.
