Saint-Saturnin

Discover Saint-Saturnin-de-Tartaronne, a small village with a majestic castle nestling at the foot of the Causse de Sauveterre cliffs. The sight of Saint-Saturnin de Tartaronne castle, nestled at the bottom of a fertile valley watered by the stream of the same name, is a sight to behold. You’ll also be able to see the village’s small heritage, which may be more modest, but still bears witness to the life of the Saint-Saturniens.

A little history

on the village of Saint-Saturnin

The first inhabitants of the Grands Causses were Paleolithic hunter-gatherers 300,000 years ago. Around 3,000 BC, they descended from the heights and began to live by agriculture. During the first 3 centuries AD, Saint-Saturnin was probably one of the suppliers of raw materials to Banassac, one of the most important pottery production centers in France at the time. In the Middle Ages, the village was one of the main crossing points between Séverac-le-Château in Rouergue and Banassac in Gévaudan.

A treasure under restoration

The now-defunct Château de Roquaizou, located a few kilometers away, was responsible for guarding the medieval road linking the two. It was later replaced, between the 12th and 14th centuries, by that of Saint-Saturnin. Unoccupied and abandoned since the 19th century, the château has benefited from an ongoing restoration campaign, which has already restored it to its former glory. The village of Saint-Saturnin also boasts a number of small heritage features that you can admire as you stroll through its narrow streets: the church, the bread oven, the shoeing loom, the wash-house and the crosses…
