for your canoe kayak paddle rafting trip- What are the different types of canoeing and kayaking routes in the Gorges du Tarn?
Generally speaking, there are three types of canoe/kayak trip in the Gorges du Tarn:
- Sainte-Enimie / La Malène: the quietest part of the Gorges du Tarn
- La Malène / Le Pas de Soucy: the most beautiful part of the Gorges du Tarn (Détroits passage). Also used by the Bateliers des Gorges du Tarn, it’s a must!
- Pas de Soucy / Le Rozier: the wildest part of the Gorges du Tarn, with more rapids.
You can, of course, canoe upstream and downstream of these sections.
- Is it possible to go canoeing without doing a course?
Of course, there are “child-safe” lakes where you can go canoeing, kayaking, paddling, pedal-boating… One of them is the plan d’eau des Vignes!
- Is there an impassable spot in the Gorges du Tarn?
Yes, the Pas de Soucy is impassable, so you’ll have to get out of the water and walk around it.
- When to go canoeing / paddling?
Canoeing, kayaking and paddling are generally possible from Easter to All Saints’ Day (neoprene wetsuits are available in the off-season for those who prefer to stay in the cold).
Please note, however, that this depends on water levels, and orders may be issued in the event of flooding or drought…
Note: before and after the season, you can go rafting, which requires a higher water level than canoeing and kayaking. If the water level in the Gorges du Tarn is too low, we can suggest rafting further afield, in the Gorges du Tapoul for example.

In fact, a footpath runs alongside the Tarn (on the left bank, on the other side of the road), so why not canoe there and walk or mountain bike back? A multimodal GR holiday idea.
- I've never canoed, kayaked or paddled before. Is that a problem?
No, the Gorges du Tarn are suitable for canoeing, kayaking and paddling for everyone – you just have to choose the right course!
