The GR736 Gorges et Vallée du Tarn, starting at the source of the Tarn and ending in Albi via the Gorges du Tarn: a new GR itinerary along the Tarn.

Recently awarded the GR® label by the Fédération Française de Randonnée Pédestre (French hiking federation), the Gorges et Vallée du Tarn itinerary offers 15 stages of hiking through the departments of Lozère,Aveyron and Tarn. From upstream to downstream, discover exceptional sites: the Gorges du Tarn, Millau, the Raspes du Tarn, the Ambialet meander… The GR736 is multimodal: on foot, by canoe, by boat, by bike, on horseback… Choose what suits you best!

The only GR to cross the entire Gorges du Tarn from the left bank, this new itinerary is ideal for discovering them at your own pace. Along the way, you can discover splendid landscapes and picturesque villages on your own. Small villages along the way provide refreshments at every stage…

Planning my itinerary

  • You can reach Villefort from the start of the GR by train.
  • From July to August in the Gorges du Tarn, summer shuttles are available to return to your starting point. Out of season, opt for cab or hitchhiking!
  • La Malle postale offers a transport service for people and luggage all along the GR Gorges et Vallée du Tarn.
  • A wide range of accommodation is available along the GR736, particularly in the Gorges du Tarn.
  • Shops to stock up on provisions and discover local produce are available in the stopover villages.

Various initiatives are underway to enhance the value of this itinerary, including the installation of dry toilets, mountain bike washing stations and picnic tables….

  • How many days does it take to do the GR736 Gorges et Vallée du Tarn?

    The GR736 Gorges et Vallée du Tarn takes more than 15 days to complete. Don’t forget that this is a multimodal itinerary, with sections for canoeing, boating, mountain biking and donkey trekking!

  • Is it possible to bivouac?

    Bivouacs are forbidden in classified sites.

  • How difficult is the GR736?

    On the whole, the GR736 Gorges et Vallée du Tarn is not very difficult: a total of 10,935 m D+. The areas with the most positive gradient are at the start on Mont-Lozère and on the climbs to the plateaus (as you move away from the Tarn), as on the Larzac, for example. At your own pace, anything is possible!

  • When is the best time to do the GR736?

    This GR can be done all year round, but is best done from April to October.

    In winter, you may find it colder, especially on the banks of the Tarn, and it may be difficult to find accommodation…

  • How to mark out a GR?
