The cirque des baumes runs along the cornice of the Gorges du Tarn, where outdoor activities are particularly popular, especiallyclimbing. In spring, you can observe the famous wild orchids, including the famous sabots de Vénus, very rare in France. DID YOU KNOW?
Today, the bones found in the Baumes chaudes cave are preserved at the Musée de l’Homme in Paris, and scientists are still leaning towards the hypothesis of a group of individuals with no particular specificity, or a group originating from Aquitaine or the Mediterranean. Dozens of these individuals bear traces of trepanning, whether medical or cultural, and most survived the treatment.
The history of the Grotte des Baumes chaudes
The Baumes Chaudes cave is internationally recognized by specialists as having been a habitat of the Chassean civilization: the first hunter-gatherers. Excavated by the famous doctor Prunière between 1875 and 1883, it revealed an ossuary of over 300 individuals. They were small in stature, with distinctive morphological features: a narrow, elongated face, a rounded forehead and a protruding nose, leading anthropologist P. Broca to refer to them as the ” Baumes Chaudes race “. This theory was soon criticized.
