Estaing

Estaing, classified as one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages, is located in northern Aveyron, at the foot of the Monts d’Aubrac, in the Lot Valley. The village of Estaing lies on the Via Podiensis pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. At the time, some pilgrims wanted to avoid crossing the Aubrac, so they came directly to Estaing from Saint Flour via Laguiole.

Estaing

Ancient medieval town in Aveyron

This medieval town has preserved its rich historical heritage. The village is dominated by the imposing Château d’Estaing, listed as a Monument Historique and a reminder of the historical presence of the Estaing family. It is one ofAveyron‘s best-known monuments. You can visit it on your own or with a guide, and see the Pont d’Estaing, listed as a Monument Historique. It crosses the Lot between Sebrazac on the left bank and Estaing on the opposite bank. Its three piers are protected by beaks. The central pier is topped by two architectural elements facing each other: a cross on the upstream side and the statue of François Estaing on the downstream side.

On the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela

Here you’ll have the opportunity to discover the church housing the relics of Saint Fleuret, traditionally described as a bishop of the Auvergne diocese whose relics were brought to Estaing around 1361-1368 by Cardinal Pierre d’Estaing. Built in the 15th century, the church is a listed historic monument, as is the carved stone cross in front of it, a reminder that we are on the road to Santiago de Compostela.
